Become a disease prevention advocate

Add your voice to the fight against meningococcal disease and meningitis.

Educating your family about meningitis is one way to help prevent it. Taking that education to your community is another. Here are some ways you can help get the word out:

  Organize an educational event

In addition to educating people one-on-one, take meningitis education to your community and schools. Here are some ways to do it:

Make sure meningitis is on the agenda for the next school or community health fair.

Ask your child’s school board about having an assembly to talk about meningitis. Members of the National Meningitis Association (NMA) and their programs are available to talk to kids about their experiences.

Work with organizations such as Scouting and 4-H to get meningitis information to their members.

  Be a volunteer

Groups such as the National Meningitis Association (NMA) and the Meningitis Foundation of America (MFA) welcome volunteers to help raise awareness of the disease. Consider donating some of your time to them or to another group in your area.

  Organize a vaccination event

The best way to fight meningitis is to vaccinate people who are at risk. You can work with your child’s health-care provider or another local medical practice to organize a vaccination event in your community. Places to hold a vaccination event include:

  Schools

  Community centers

  Youth centers

  Houses of worship

  Organize a fund-raising event

Teens and young adults can help raise money to fight meningitis. The money can be donated to nonprofit meningitis organizations such as the National Meningitis Association or the Meningitis Foundation of America or can be used to vaccinate kids whose families cannot afford it. Here are a few of the events you can organize:

  A car wash

  A bake sale

  A school dance

  A raffle

  A talent show

Make sure people who attend these events know they are donating to prevent meningitis, and hand out a meningitis fact sheet to everyone who comes.

  Tell us about it

If you hold any sort of meningitis-related event in your community, we want to hear about it.
